Stateful Architecture
In a stateful architecture, the server maintains some context or "state" about each client between requests. This means that the server remembers previous interactions, allowing it to link multiple requests together as part of an ongoing "session." Each client has a unique session, and the server must manage or store information about each session.
In a stateful system:
- The server holds the state (e.g., login sessions, user preferences, shopping carts) across multiple requests.
- The client doesn’t need to provide all information for every request; the server already remembers the session.
Characteristics of Stateful Architecture:
- Session Management: The server keeps track of each client through sessions, which might include login status, user preferences, or interaction history.
- Connection Persistence: Stateful systems often maintain persistent connections, meaning the same client uses the same connection throughout the session.
- Complex Server Logic: The server is responsible for managing session information, which increases complexity and overhead (e.g., storing session data in memory or a database).
Examples of Stateful Protocols:
1. FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
FTP is a protocol for transferring files between a client and a server, and it is stateful. Here’s why:
- When you connect to an FTP server, a persistent connection is established between the client and the server.
- The server maintains session state during the interaction, like the current directory, user authentication status, and file transfer progress.
- If the client sends multiple commands to the server (e.g., navigating through directories or transferring multiple files), the server remembers where the client is in its file system, and authentication is maintained throughout the session.
Example:
When you connect to an FTP server, you start a session with a login command. The server then "remembers" that you’re logged in:

From this point, every command you send assumes you are authenticated, and the server remembers your current working directory until you log out.
2. Telnet
Telnet is a protocol used to interact with remote computers or network devices. It is stateful because:
- Once connected to a remote machine using Telnet, a persistent session is established.
- The server remembers the user’s authentication status and the current state of the session (e.g., what commands have been run, the current shell state, etc.).
- Commands sent through the session are based on this persistent context (e.g., the same terminal session is maintained throughout).
Example:
A Telnet session might start by establishing a connection and logging in:
$ telnet example.com

Here, the server keeps track of the user's session. As the user interacts with the remote shell, the connection remains active and stateful.
3. Traditional Database Connections (e.g., MySQL)
In stateful database connections, once a client connects to a database server (e.g., MySQL), the connection remains open, and the server maintains context about the client's session. This can include:
- The client’s current transaction status.
- Temporary tables or session variables.
- The current state of the connection, including whether or not the client is in the middle of a transaction.
Example:
In a stateful database session, a transaction might look like this:
START TRANSACTION;
INSERT INTO orders (product_id, quantity) VALUES (1, 2);
UPDATE inventory SET stock = stock - 2 WHERE product_id = 1;
COMMIT;
The database server keeps track of this transaction's state. If the connection were stateless, the client would need to resend this transaction context with each request, which would be inefficient.

Imagine you're at a coffee shop:
- In a stateful system, you place your order, and the barista remembers you. They keep track of the fact that you ordered a latte. You can leave for a while, and when you return, the barista knows you still need to pick up your drink.
- In a stateless system, every time you interact with the barista, you have to repeat your order as if you’re a new customer each time. Even if you just asked for a latte 5 minutes ago, they don't remember you—they treat you like a fresh customer.
